The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lens is a solid option for portrait photography, with excellent image quality and build. The lens has a nice short telephoto perspective, and its bright f/1.4 aperture allows it to perform well in darker situations. The lens is well-constructed and balanced nicely on larger Sony cameras. Despite being made of plastic, it feels solid and assembled, and the slight weather sealing adds to its durability. The lens boasts a number of control points, including an aperture ring that can be set to click with confidence and a manual focus switch. However, it is a bit heavy at just over 800 grams, and the autofocus can be slower than expected. The lens does not have image stabilization or weather sealing, but its overall quality makes it enjoyable to handle and use out in the real world. The image quality is excellent, particularly on a full-frame camera, with great sharpness and contrast across the frame even at wider apertures. On an APS-C camera, the lens's quality remains very good, although not perfect. There is some vignetting and average performance in close-up image quality, but the lens performs well against light and has solid bokeh with minimal chromatic aberration.

The lens performs well in real-world use, offering great sharpness and contrast, particularly on full-frame cameras, with solid bokeh and minimal chromatic aberration.
