The Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 is an expensive lens, but its build quality is top-notch with a solid metal construction. It is quite heavy at two and a half pounds, and there is no weather sealing, which may be disappointing for a lens at this price point. The manual focus ring is smooth with around 300 degrees of precision, making it easy to use. The lens is sharp in the middle, with just a slight decrease in sharpness and contrast towards the corners. It performs best at f2.8 or f4, where the corner sharpness is excellent. Vignetting is noticeable at f1.4, but it improves at f2 and is completely gone by f2.8. The lens can focus down to 78 inches, and while it's not a macro lens, the close-up image quality is impressive. The bokeh is smooth with just a bit of character, and there is very little chromatic aberration, even at f1.4. Overall, despite the high price, the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 delivers excellent image quality with good colors and contrast, making it one of the top lenses in its category.
The bokeh is smooth with just a bit of character, and there is very little chromatic aberration, even at f1.4.
