Pros
  • Good picture quality
  • Handles bright lights well
  • Decent macro performance
Cons
  • Barrel distortion at 18mm
  • Slow and variable maximum aperture

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS ii Lens is a great value for the price. It is small, light, and cheap, making it a good option for beginner photographers. The lens looks nice, but the build quality is a little plasticky and the barrel is wobbly. The zoom rings start out nice but soon become jerky. The autofocus is mostly accurate but a little slow and quite noisy. It lacks full-time manual focus and there is no distance markings, which can be annoying. The picture quality is good enough when used at smaller apertures and becomes excellent throughout the zoom range when stopped down to f8. The lens handles bright lights well, but the barrel distortion at 18mm is a real annoyance. It also has a slow and variable maximum aperture which is not ideal for video. The build quality is functional, but the lens has few serious optical flaws and can still produce great images. It's a good option for beginners, although experienced photographers might find its limitations frustrating. Overall, it's a decent kit lens that performs better than expected for the price.
