Overall, the new Canon 100-400 L lens is pretty much everything we hoped for - great build quality, better image, and its optics are crazy. It's easily the sharpest lens I've tested that goes beyond 300, especially on an APS-C camera.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM 'L' 'ii' is an outstanding lens with exceptional image quality and build. The lens is incredibly sharp and performs well even on an APS-C camera. The maximum aperture of f/4.5 to 5.6 may not let in a large amount of light, but it is compensated by the excellent new image stabilization system that provides efficient stabilization and allows for sharper footage and still images. The build of the lens is top-notch, made of metal, tough, and weather-sealed. The zoom system has been improved with a ring, making it much better than the previous model. The lens also features a fast and accurate autofocus system, a 77mm filter, and comes with a large hood with switchable gap underneath for filters. The image quality is excellent, offering sharpness and edge-to-edge excellence even on an APS-C camera, with minimal distortion and vignetting. Overall, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM 'L' 'ii' surpasses expectations in terms of build quality, image quality, and optics, making it highly recommended for serious wildlife and sports photographers.
If you're seeking to do wildlife work, then the lens is just worth the huge financial investment it demands. Highly recommended.
