Pros
  • Good display
  • Excellent performance
  • Battery life
Cons
  • Fan speed
  • Thermal performance

The laptop's battery life with hybrid mode enabled is good, while the battery drains faster when under load with only Nvidia graphics in use.

The Lenovo Y540 is a powerful gaming laptop with a good display, powered by an Intel i7 9750H processor, NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti graphics, and 16GB of memory running in dual channel. The 15.6 inch 1080p 60 Hertz IPS screen has good viewing angles and offers the option for enabling or disabling hybrid mode. The matte finish screen looks good and backlights to almost 180 degrees. The build quality of the laptop felt good, with smooth edges and corners, and it is lightweight. The laptop's battery life with hybrid mode enabled is good, while the battery drains faster when under load with only Nvidia graphics in use. The laptop's thermal performance was reasonable in quiet and balanced modes, with some power limit throttling, but the temperatures dropped significantly when an under-volted cooling pad was used during testing. The Lenovo Y540 performed well in gaming tests with features like the white backlit keyboard and good speaker sound quality. The lack of higher fan speeds when swapping quiet and performance modes was noted as an issue, along with some thermal throttling during worst-case scenario tests. The screen could benefit from a higher refresh rate option for gaming. Despite some missing features like G-sync and RGB lighting compared to the more expensive Y740, the Y540 offers good value for money. Overall, the Lenovo Y540 is a powerful gaming laptop with good display and battery life, but it could use improvements in the fan speed and thermal performance.
