84

The Lenovo Y740 gaming laptop offers good performance, excellent display, and a unique design. It has decent battery life, but there are some concerns with thermal management.

The 17.3-inch 1080p 144Hz IPS screen offers a great visual experience.

Pros
  • Excellent display with G-Sync support
  • Good selection of ports
  • RGB keyboard lighting
  • Solid build quality
Cons
  • Lack of fan speed control due to BIOS update
  • Shallow key presses on the keyboard
  • Limited storage expansion options

The lack of fan speed control due to a recent BIOS update affects thermal performance during demanding workloads.

The Lenovo Y740 gaming laptop comes with an i7 H CPU, NVIDIA RTX 2070 Max-Q, and 16GB of memory. It also features a 17.3-inch 1080p 144Hz IPS screen, which provides a great visual experience. The laptop has a metal lid with a nice iron-gray color, giving it a sleek and clean look. Despite being a bit heavy, the build quality feels solid, although there is some chassis flex. The laptop has a good selection of ports, including USB 3.1 Gen2, Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, and Ethernet. The RGB keyboard lighting is a nice touch, but the smaller numpad and shallow key presses might not suit everyone. The touchpad is responsive and smooth, but the presence of only one M.2 slot could limit storage expansion options. The machine offers decent battery life when using the Lenovo Advantage software to optimize power modes, but disabling hybrid mode can impact performance and battery life. The 230W power brick provided is sufficient, but quite large compared to other 230W units. Thermal performance is acceptable, but the lack of fan speed control due to a recent BIOS update can lead to higher temperatures during demanding workloads, and the cooling pad can help improve thermal throttling. Gaming performance is good, offering high frame rates and smooth gaming experiences in most titles. Overall, the Lenovo Y740 is a great gaming laptop with a unique design, good performance, and a solid selection of features, but there are some concerns with thermal management due to the recent BIOS update.

The RGB keyboard lighting is a nice touch, but the smaller numpad and shallow key presses might not suit everyone.
