Gigabyte A5 / XMG Apex 15 Review
70
The Gigabyte A5/XMG Apex 15 is a decent gaming laptop with good performance and a matte black chassis. However, the build quality and materials are not as nice as some of the more expensive laptops from larger brands. The battery life is not great, but the removable battery feature is convenient. The 1080p screen has decent response time and brightness, making it suitable for gaming and content creation workloads. The 5900HX CPU performs well, but the Clevo software and BIOS are limited in terms of controlling the HX series CPU.
The battery life wasn't great, but the removable battery feature is convenient.

- External monitor boosts performance
Cons
- Build quality and materials are not as nice as more expensive laptops

The 5900HX CPU seems to be the reason for the good performance in CPU and content creator workloads.
The Gigabyte A5/XMG Apex 15 is a decent gaming laptop with good performance and a matte black chassis. The laptop uses the same chassis as the popular Gigabyte A5X1 gaming laptop, and this one is the Apex 15 from XMG. It is powered by the 8-core Ryzen 950 HX CPU, 8GB of memory, and NVIDIA RTX 370 that powers the 1080p screen. The laptop weighs about 2.1 kilos (4.7 pounds) alone, and 3 kilos or 6.6 pounds with the 230 brick and cables. The laptop has a 15.6-inch 1080p 240Hz screen, and there are other panel options available, though it does not have Optimus for a speed boost. The keyboard is nothing special, but it's easy to type with and doesn't have any issues. The touchpad is precise and accurate, and fingerprints hardly show up on the finish. The laptop has a 4-cell 49w removable battery, but the battery life is not great. The laptop performed well in CPU and GPU workloads, but there was CPU thermal throttling at 95 degrees celsius. The 5900HX CPU seems to be the reason for the good performance in CPU and content creator workloads. The external monitor also boosts performance and bypasses Optimus.
