ASUS Zephyrus G (GA502DU) Review

70

The ASUS Zephyrus G (GA502DU) is a decent gaming laptop due to its AMD Ryzen 7 3750H and GTX 1660 TI Max-Q combination, which provides good gaming performance. It runs cooler compared to Intel options and offers one of the best battery results for a gaming laptop. The keyboard is comfortable, and it also has good dual M.2 slots. However, the screen is just okay for gaming, the 6-bit panel has lower brightness, and there's some backlight bleed. The laptop's smaller arrow keys and the glitch with the Vulcan gaming system diminish its appeal. Overall, it performs well but is slightly overpriced, and it's recommended to purchase it during a sale.

The rise in CPU tends to run cooler compared to Intel options due to the lower TDP, resulting in less power and heat.

Pros
  • Decent gaming performance
  • Runs cooler compared to Intel options
  • Good battery life
  • Comfortable keyboard with good dual M.2 slots
Cons
  • Screen is just okay for gaming
  • Backlight bleed
  • Smaller arrow keys
  • Priced slightly higher compared to similar options

The ASUS Zephyrus G (GA502DU) is a decent gaming laptop for the price. The laptop has an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H and GTX 1660 TI Max-Q combination, which provides good gaming performance. It is worth noting that the rise in CPU tends to run cooler compared to Intel options due to the lower TDP, resulting in less power and heat. The rise in CPU also provides some nice advantages, as the graphics built into the CPU are better than Intel's integrated graphics. In terms of battery testing, the laptop showed impressive results, being one of the best for gaming laptops. It was possible to address thermals a bit with the cooling pad, as the vents directly above the fans were being blocked off. However, undervolting with Ryzen is not an option at the moment. The laptop also has a good keyboard that is comfortable for typing, and it comes with good dual M.2 slots. However, the screen is only okay for gaming, as the 6-bit panel has lower brightness and the color gamut is not great. Additionally, there is some backlight bleed. The smaller arrow keys on the keyboard are a downside, and the strange issue with Vulcan identified months ago seems to be present with these AMD NVIDIA laptops. In the end, purely in terms of gaming, the GA502 performs well at decent settings in most games while being in a slimmer and lighter package. However, it is recommended to purchase it on sale, as there's just a lot of competition at this price point.
