Pros
  • Suitable for macro photography and portraits
  • Decent image stabilization
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • Starting to show its age in terms of sharpness

The lens performs well at f/5.6 and f/11, although there is noticeable chromatic aberration and softness at wider apertures.

The Nikon AF-S Micro 105mm f/2.8 G ED is a versatile lens suitable for macro photography and portraits. The image stabilization works well at normal magnifications, but is less effective at close-up macro shots. The build quality is excellent with a metallic body and weather sealing. The 720-gram lens feels solid and well made, and the rubberized focus ring turns relatively precisely. The autofocus motor is reasonably accurate, although the lens is starting to show its age, having been first marketed in 2006. In terms of image quality, the lens performs well in the middle at f/2.8, but corners start to show softness. It performs best at f/5.6 and f/11, although there is some noticeable chromatic aberration and softness when the aperture is wider than f/5.6. The lens also exhibits some vignetting and flaring, typical for a lens of its kind. Overall, while the Nikon AF-S Micro 105mm f/2.8 G ED has good build quality and image stabilization, it is starting to show its age compared to newer and more affordable options available from other companies such as Tamron, Sigma, and Venus Optics.

The image stabilization works well at normal magnifications, but is less effective at close-up macro shots.
